Springtime in the Netherlands brings to mind images of fields full of tulips, framed by waterways, lush meadows and coastal dunes.

Yet this fascinating country has more riches to reveal at other times of the year. As spring gives way to summer, visitors are greeted with the sight of sailing boats bobbing on the Frisian lakes, and the setting sun silhouettes windmills against the dusky sky. Boat trips along the canals or bicycle rides through the towns are the perfect way to admire the monuments and historical buildings which testify to a rich and eventful past. With the onset of autumn, the Hoge Veluwe National Park, home to the famous Kröller-Müller Museum, is clothed in autumnal reds and golds. This is the ideal season to go and discover some of the many museums on offer, or to warm up in one of the welcoming brown cafés.

The winter storms remind Dutch people of their ongoing struggle against the sea, vast structures having been built to protect the land from its ravages. But this season also has its fair share of delights, including frozen canals transformed into skating rinks, which echo the winter scenes immortalised by the great painters of the Golden Age.
