From the Blue Guides series. A guide for travellers to Tuscany. It offers comprehensive coverage of this beautiful region and the artistic treasures of the famous Tuscan towns. There is information on the museums, galleries and churches of the region, along with a choice of hotels, restaurants and cafes. Maps are included. From the book: Siena - The Palio Every year 10 Contrade (wards of Siena) are selected to compete in the famous Corsa del Palio, a horserace which takes place twice a year in the Campo: on 2 July (Visitation) and 16 August (the day after the Assumption). The later and more important contest was first run in 1310; the earlier race was established in1659. Rivalry between the Contrade is strong, and provides an extraordinary atmosphere in the city throughout the summer. The prize is the Palio, a banner designed anew each year which goes to the winning Contrada, not an individual, and celebrations continue for many weeks after the victory, in which the horse is the main protagonist.
