Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster
by Jon Krakauer

On assignment for Outside magazine in the spring of 1996, Jon Krakauer went to the Himalayas as a client of veteran climber Rob Hall, to report on the growing commercialization of Everest. Ascending the mountain in close proximity to Hall's team was a guided expedition led by the legendary American climber, Scott Fischer. But neither Hall nor Fischer survived the powerful and unpredictable storm that trapped them on the top of the world. Into Thin Air is an examination of what has compelled so many people to throw caution to the wind and willingly subject themselves to the risk, hardship, and expense brought on by the climb, as well as Krakauer's own account of the ill-fated expedition.
