A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains
written by Isabella Bird, introduction by Daniel J. Boorstin

During the winter of 1873, a solitary English lady toured the Rocky Mountains on horseback, viewing a world of temperance colonies, saloon towns, mining camps and the overwhelming mountain landscape. Bird was guided at times by Mountain Jim, a murderous desperado who was, nonetheless, chivalrous to women and entertained the her with recitations of poetry and the dissipated story of his life. The author recounts her own intrepid travels and provides a perceptive account of a changing American West.
