BoorstinDuring the winter of 1873, a solitary English lady toured the Rocky Mountains on horseback, viewing a world of temperance colonies, saloon towns, mining camps and the overwhelming mountain landscape. Bird was guided at times by Mountain Jim, a murderous desperado who was, nonetheless, chivalrous to women and entertained the her with recitations of poetry and the dissipated story of his life.
