Go to Hawaii

Let's Go Hawaii On a Budget: On a Budget

From the Let's Go series.

The most remote island group in the world, the Hawaiian islands are separated from the mainland US by over 2000 miles and a less quantifiable disparity in culture. Hawaii is composed of 8 major islands---Big Island, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau---and over 120 other small islands and atolls. The so-called "crossroads of the Pacific," the islands have developed into a unique environment of tropical enticements and melting pot of cultures. Hawaii is a geological wonder, encompassing within its shores a wide variety of climates and ecosystems. The awe-inspiring landscape---including rainforests brimming with tropical fruit and desolate remnants of lava flows, all backed by the thundering Pacific---is alive, in every sense of the word, with the forces of creation. The heartbeat of the Earth is so strong here that it is almost palpable, a sense that perhaps explains the strong ties that Hawaiians feel to their land. The allure of the land has enticed voyagers from Polynesia, Europe, Asia, and beyond; and today Hawaii is the most ethnically diverse state in the US. Residents of radically different backgrounds are united under the affectionate term kama'aina, and in turn, they add to the brilliant mosaic of the islands. The culture of the islands is an amalgamation of native Hawaiian tradition, laid-back surfer lifestyle, the influence of an on-going military presence, waves of international tourists, and more, all united by the aloha spirit. Generalizations are few and far between in this dynamic, colorful state, however. Along every beach there is yet another more secluded stretch of sand to call your own, and beyond every stunning vista there is an even more breathtaking sight. The diversity of land, people, cultures, and experiences is what makes Hawaii both unique and utterly intoxicating. In Hawaii, the journey never ends.
