Go to Uganda
Footprint Uganda Handbook by Mike HoddFrom the Footprint Handbooks series. Uganda, straddling the equator and perched on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, is marketing itself hard as the ultimate eco-destination. Its gorillas represent perhaps the most powerful eco-image of them all. But there is much more to Uganda than this: it has a fantastic climate, an ever-changing landscape, and people who are honest, polite and genuinely pleased to help. Above all, Uganda works: it is well organized and efficient. Well-maintained roads with immaculately clean verges immediately give a good impression. A huge array of greens, mixed with the terracotta red of the soil, is easy on the eye and, if you are looking for personal service in relaxed surroundings, then Uganda could well be for you.
True, there some are security problems, but forget about Idi Amin. Uganda, apart from a few area, is very safe and almost hassle free. Just relax: go gorilla or chimp tracking; climb Mount Elgon or the Rwenzoris; look deeper into Africa's past with its Kabaka traditions; visit the Ssesses - tropical islands in a freshwater lake; speed down the River Nile in a helter of white water; or just sit and enjoy the stunning landscapes, you'll only be disturbed by the cries of "munzunga" from the children on their way to school. If none of these appeals, learn more about the country by taking a village walk or even better do some voluntary work to put something back into the country. It's fun and very satisfying.
