Lone Voyager: The Extraordinary Adventures of Howard Blackburn, Hero
by Joseph Garland

Originally published in 1963 and recemtly reprinted, Lone Voyager recounts the story of Blackburn's survival in a winter storm off Newfoundland in 1883.

Like countless Gloucester fisherman before and since, Howard Blackurn and Tom Welch were trawling for halibut off the Newfoundland banks in an open dory in 1883 when a sudden blizzard separated them from their mother ship. Alone on the empty North Atlantic, they battled towering waves and frozen spray to stay afloat. Welch soon succumbed to exposure, and Blackburn did the only thing he could: he rowed for shore. He rowed for five days with his hands frozen to the oars, until he spied the coast of Newfoundland. Yet his tests had only begun.

Garland's other books include Boston's North Shore, Beam Reach, Gloucester on the wind, Beating to the Windward, and The Gloucester Guide.

"Brings alive the struggles of the Gloucester men at sea in the era of fishing under sail like no other book I've ever read...A wonderful, beautifully written book "
--Sebastian Junger, author of The Perfect Storm
