The Machu Picchu Guidebook: A Self-Guided Tour
by Ruth Wright

Machu Picchu is one of the world's great travel destinations. Every year, more than 300,000 tourists visit this awe-inspiring and breathtakingly beautiful site in the Andes of Peru. Built in the mid-fifteenth century by Incan royalty and "re-discovered" by Hiram Bingham in 1911, Machu Picchu is the stuff of legends. And The Machu Picchu Guidebook has proven to be one of the most successful and acclaimed guidebooks to this popular archaeological treasure.

Machu Picchu is a dynamic site -- what we know about it keeps evolving. Building on the original success of the book, this second edition of The Machu Picchu Guidebook has been expanded to include everything that has been learned since the first edition. Authors Wright and Zagarra share new discoveries as well as refined interpretations by international scholars. A feature, available in no other book, is an artist's rendition of Machu Picchu, presented as a three-page foldout in glorious color. It brings Machu Picchu to life by depicting the royal retreat as it appeared on the June 21st solstice ceremony in the year 1530, at the height of the Inca empire. The art first appeared as a supplement to National Geographic Magazine.

This edition also introduces a detailed map of the top 300 feet of the holy mountain of Huayna Picchu, showing all of its fabulous structures, terraces and tunnel, and the discovery of a new important trail and ceremonial platform leading off of the Inca Trail halfway up to the Gate of the Sun. The authors also show that Machu Picchu was still a work in process at the time of abandonment in about 1540, with temples, walls and canals still under construction throughout. The walking tour and photos show you this evidence as you proceed through the royal retreat. Updated as well is all the practical travel information that makes this book the one indispensable guide to Machu Picchu.

"The best all around guide for those who've been or who are going to Machu Picchu . . . . Absolutely indispensable! "
--Don Montague, president, South American Explorers
