For Bruges, a disaster in the fifteenth century led to a triumph in the twentieth century. The silting up of its outlet to the sea brought to an end the status of Bruges as Europe's leading centre of trade Ð everything transferring almost overnight, to Antwerp. Citizens abandoned their splendid art city and most of those who stayed fell into abject poverty. Virtually nothing was built for almost four centuries, conversely relatively little of importance was demolished. For these reasons, with the exception of Venice, no other European city has survived that can be so completely synonymous with the Middle Ages. Other Belgian cities have splendid market squares and cathedrals but in none of them is it possible to observe such a completely medieval scene. VG0329 Landmark Visitors Guide to Bruges $10.95
