Go to Tallinn, Riga, or Vilnius

Bradt Guide to Baltic Capitals: Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, Kaliningrad
by Neil Taylor

From the Bradt Travel Guides series.

This compact volume offers a comprehensive perspective on each city. Details of city walks will help you to make the most of the wealth of history and architecture, while the wide selection of restaurants means that a relaxed evening meal is never far away. And if you're feeling energetic, there are excursions beyond the city to whet your appetite for more.

Author's Note, by Neil Taylor

For 45 years, the Baltic capital cities of Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius were hardly open to foreigners, and Kaliningrad was completely closed to them. Now all four are wide open and, in the new Bradt guide, everything they offer is described.

But a Bradt guide is more than just a companion en route; it sets the scene before you leave. At last, readers can penetrate the mysteries of the former Konigsberg, now Kaliningrad, and find out how 100% ethnic cleansing took place there after the war with the full approval of the United Nations, and why the Russians even prevented many of their own citizens from visiting. In Vilnius the book covers the eight changes of regime that have taken place during the 20th century and shows how each has left its mark at the sites that tourists will visit.

On a practical level, appropriate sites, hotels and restaurants that opened in 2000 are all included, so visitors can find the first Russian restaurant to open in Tallinn since independence, a nuclear submarine in Kaliningrad harbour, or a waxworks in Riga opened, like much else there, just in time for the city's 800th birthday in 2001.

Thanks to the guide, no visitor should overpay for a taxi or even pay full price for a hotel, while the extensive network of public transport in all four cities should become clear to all.

" Clear and concise chapters offer practical hints on what to see and do. Recommended. "
