Bradt Guide to Armenia with Nagorno Karabagh by Nicholas HoldingFrom the Bradt Travel Guides series. This guide is the first in English to offer comprehensive information on travel in Armenia and author Nicholas Holding shows that this country is a destination well worth visiting in its own right. With thorough coverage of the capital, Yerevan, and the highlights such as Selim caravanserai, the fortress of Smbataberd and the monastery of Noravank, it is the indispensable guide to a fascinating country. Practical details include visas, red tape, land border crossings and health & safety issues. Author's Note, by Nicholas Holding: This book is aimed primarily at the general tourist who is interested in seeing the country and understanding something of its long and complex history. The author is not a member of the diaspora and does not speak Armenian. Nevertheless even fairly knowledgeable members of the diaspora should find it useful as they, like virtually all other visitors to Armenia, unfortunately confine themselves at present to only half a dozen places which are not always the most interesting ones. It appears that few visitors know anything about many of the other sights in Armenia which warrant a visit. As a consequence, only a handful of visitors to Armenia spend more than a week in the country and the average visit lasts a mere four or five days. This book seeks to rectify that regrettable situation and demonstrate that Armenia has a huge potential for visitors. Not just for general sightseeing, although its spectacular gorges and medieval buildings certainly provide plenty of excellent opportunities for that, but also for activities such as hiking, birdwatching, architectural tours, historical visits, botanical trips, angling, horse riding and caving. Although many visitors will probably continue to combine a visit to Armenia with one to neighbouring Georgia or Iran, there is quite enough in Armenia alone to occupy several holidays without ever going to the same place twice. Indeed, the most commonly heard complaint from visitors is that they had insufficient time. Sometimes the visitors are in a tourist coach lamenting that they are faced with long journeys and few stops as the tour operator decided that they must see the prescribed sights with the minimum possible number of nights in the country. At other times, fitter people gaze longingly out of the bus window at the fantastic potential for hiking which they have no opportunity to explore.
