The Dutch and French share an island tiny in square miles, but big in reputation. In the last couple of decades, St. Maarten/St. Martin has become one of the Caribbean's most popular destinations. The two sides of the island demonstrate something of a split personality: the food and beaches are better on St. Martin, the quieter French side, while golf and nightlife are more prevalent on St. Maarten, the busier Dutch side. The crowding issue is more of a hassle on the Dutch side, but cruise-ship day-trippers pack the beaches everywhere and mob the duty-free shops to buy everything from tacky trinkets to designer jewelry. Away from the ritzy hotels, though, you can find such treasures as Grand-Case, a former fishing village famed for its delightful eateries. And fortunately, the island is now struggling to preserve its remaining natural areas. Protected environments for wildlife both on land and in the sea have been the focus of these welcome efforts.
