The great swirls of a turquoise sea and tracts of golden sand are not those of a Mediterranean island but are, in fact, the true form of the shoreline of Britain. Mudflats, dunes and scrubland are the source of strange, exotic hues and patterns when viewed from above. Small harbours yield complex herring-bone arrangements of boats, and busy commercial ports become semi-abstract, multi-coloured assemblages.

Richard Cooke has created this extraordinary sequence of images celebrating shoreline diversity and beauty. To achieve these mesmerizing effects of colour and form, Cooke has chosen - as far as possible - to photograph directly above the chosen subject-areas, creating marvellously composed photographs.
