I try in this book to examine what a 'sacred place' might be, and conclude that it is a 'special kind of special place', which depends for its 'sacred' character on the understanding people bring to it. I try, too, to define the different kinds of sacred place, and illustrate them by some of the sites in the care of the National Trust: caves, islands, mountains, temples, monasteries, gardens and so on.
