The Aspen Times published this view just as the fortunes of the famous silver mining town would begin to plummet after the return to the gold standard. About 5,000 people made their living in this community, in the mining, smelting, foundry and railroad related businesses. All would disappear before the post-World War II rise of the ski resorts that give Aspen its current vitality.
