Go to the Dolomites

Sunflower Landscapes of Dolomites
by Dietrich Hollhuber

From the Sunflower Landscapes Guides series.

Gentle green valleys and towering limestone pinnacles: the Dolomites are a holiday paradise for lovers of the countryside. This comprehensive guide covers all aspects of the area -- history, legends, customs, food, art and architecture, transport and other practicalities. The book is an ideal companion for motorists, walkers and cyclists, but even those who go for the skiing season will find it useful, since lift opening times (summer and winter) are given together with prices.Rather different from the usual Sunflower guide, this book has been translated from the German for the 'Landscapes' Series. Its coverage is far wider than is usual in our guides -- it contains lots of general information, from history to restaurants (some recommended restaurants are listed in the Index, under the relevant town or village).

The format is different, too: instead of separate car tours and walks, each chapter covers a specific area, with detailed information about the various towns and villages -- from the 'sights' to lift opening times and prices. The 24 main walks are described in the same chapters, highlighted in coloured panels. But the book also describes in detail dozens of other walking and cycling 'tips' and mentions many more of the author's favourite hikes in each area. We strongly recommend that you buy a Tabacco 1:25,000 map covering the area in which you will be spending most of your time (see page 19).

In addition to the eastern Dolomites (east of the A22 motorway) rising in the provinces of South Tyrol, Trento and Belluno, the book covers an area outside the Dolomites -- the eastern part of South Tyrol. The bordering cities of Bozen/ Bolzano, Brixen/Bressanone and Bruneck/Brunico are also described, with town plans. (The book does not take in the Brenta Dolomites west of the A22 motorway.)

Best months for walking: May to October

Where to stay: there are such a wide variety of places offering excellent accommodation that we recommend you read the book before deciding where to stay.
